identity stealer, theft. scammer

Said they were my mortgage company and I have problems with payment

Someone claiming his name was David Justice and Senior Office with the United States Regional Bank called this morning 9/17/2013 asking for my legal representation name and fax number. Clearly bogus and MOST annoying. I was told there was a lawsuit with my name and social security number attached to it so my assumption is it was possibly a debt collector? I provided my attorney's name and fax number. He will handle it should they contact him. Can this also be reported to the FTC?

This is a scam collection company who has somehow obtained information from online payday loan places (so they have social, driver's license and bank account information). They claim that you owe x amount (varies per person) and often state they are Officer "Smith" or other american name with heavy middle eastern accent. They threaten you with jail (which is against the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and cannot (and will not) provide validation information. If they provide anything, it's a settlement letter not a validation of debt letter. Do not give them any money or information without being able to validate the debt.
