Chattanooga is Tennessee's fourth-most populous city with 191,496 residents as of 2024, located in Hamilton County along the Tennessee River at the transition between the Appalachian Mountains and Cumberland Plateau. A crucial Civil War transportation hub with multiple converging railroads, Chattanooga developed into one of the Southeast's largest heavy industrial centers and today drives its economy through automotive manufacturing, healthcare, insurance, tourism, and corporate headquarters. The city sits strategically between major regional centers: 118 miles northwest of Atlanta, 112 miles southwest of Knoxville, and 134 miles southeast of Nashville, serving as a transit hub via Interstate highways and railroad lines. Known officially as the "Scenic City" and unofficially as "Gig City" for its claim to the Western Hemisphere's fastest internet service, Chattanooga is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and gained international fame from the 1941 Glenn Miller hit "Chattanooga Choo Choo." The area has been continuously inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic period (c. 10,000 BCE) through Cherokee occupation beginning in 1776, until the U.S. government's forced relocation of Native Americans westward along the "Trail of Tears" in 1838. Johnson City is a city spanning Washington, Carter, and Sullivan counties in East Tennessee with a 2020 population of 71,046, making it the state's eighth-most populous city and the principal city of a metropolitan statistical area of 207,285 residents. Founded in 1856 by Henry Johnson as a railroad depot, the city became a major Southeast rail hub with three railway lines crossing downtown, hosting the historic narrow-gauge East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad and the standard-gauge Clinchfield Railroad through the early 20th century. The 1901 establishment of the Mountain Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (a 450-acre campus completed in 1903 at $3 million) and the 1911 authorization of East Tennessee State Normal School catalyzed rapid growth, elevating Johnson City to Tennessee's fifth-largest city by 1930. The city gained national prominence in 1928 through Columbia Records' Johnson City Sessions, which launched "Fiddlin' Charlie" Bowman to stardom and featured performers like Blind Lemon Jefferson in downtown's Fountain Square. During Prohibition, Johnson City earned the nickname "Little Chicago" for its reputation as a bootlegging hotbed and alleged distribution center for Al Capone's operations. Kingsport is a city located in Sullivan and Hawkins counties in northeastern Tennessee along the Holston River, with a 2020 population of 55,442 and serving as the largest city in the Kingsport-Bristol metropolitan area of 307,613 residents. Chartered in 1822, the city's name derives from King's Boat Yard, the head of navigation on the Holston River, and developed as an important shipping port where goods from the surrounding region were loaded onto barges for transport to Knoxville. Originally settled around 1787 as "Salt Lick" at the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Holston River, the area served as a staging ground for pioneers traveling the Wilderness Road to Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap. During the Civil War, the city experienced the December 13, 1864 Battle of Kingsport, where 300 Confederate troops under Colonel Richard Morgan held off a Union force of 5,500 before surrendering, resulting in the city losing its charter. Re-chartered in 1917 as an early "garden city" designed by landscape architect John Nolen, Kingsport became known as the "Model City" with its organized zones for commerce, churches, housing, and industry along the riverfront.
