Pittsburgh is a city in southwestern Pennsylvania located where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River, with a 2020 population of 302,971 making it Pennsylvania's second-largest city and the center of a metropolitan area with over 2.43 million people. Known as "the Steel City," Pittsburgh was named in 1758 by Scottish General John Forbes in honor of British statesman William Pitt and developed as a vital industrial hub that once ranked behind only New York City and Chicago in corporate headquarters employment. The city experienced significant deindustrialization in the late 20th century but has since diversified its economy around healthcare, education, and technology, anchored by institutions like the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon University, and 10 Fortune 500 companies. Pittsburgh is famous for its 446 bridges - earning it the nickname "City of Bridges" - and cultural institutions including the Carnegie Museums, National Aviary, and professional sports teams like the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. The city also serves as a federal headquarters for cyber defense, robotics, and energy research, and in 2009 hosted the G20 summit. Carnegie is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, approximately 5 miles southwest of Pittsburgh in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, with a population of 8,134 as of the 2020 census. Named after philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who donated a library to the town, it was incorporated on March 1, 1894, from the former boroughs of Chartiers and Mansfield and later annexed part of Robinson Township. The borough's economy historically centered on coal mining and steel mills including Superior Steel and Union Electric Steel, with rail connections to the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal and Pennsylvania Railroad in the early twentieth century, but declined significantly after major steel mills closed in the 1970s. Carnegie endured a major KKK march on August 25, 1923, when an estimated 10,000-30,000 Klansmen gathered to target the heavily Catholic town, resulting in a riot with casualties, and suffered severe flooding damage from Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Since 2014, the borough's Main Street has experienced economic revitalization with new restaurants and businesses opening in the commercial district. Bethel Park is a borough with home rule status located approximately 7 miles south of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, with a 2020 census population of 33,577. Originally settled around 1800 and established as Bethel Township in 1886, the borough was incorporated on March 17, 1949, and named after Bethel Presbyterian Church. The completion of the Pittsburgh Railways Interurbans in the early 1900s transformed Bethel Park into an early streetcar suburb, and unlike most of the region's passenger rail services which ceased in the 1950s-1960s, its trolley lines were preserved and upgraded to modern light rail standards in the 1980s. Bethel Park is historically significant as the site of the first armored car robbery in the United States on March 11, 1927, when Paul Jaworski and the Flathead gang dynamited a Brinks truck near the Coverdale Mine. Covering 11.7 square miles at elevations ranging from 980 to 1,370 feet, the borough sits at the margin between the Pittsburgh Low Plateau and Waynesburg Hills and is underlain by coal-bearing sedimentary formations, including the Pittsburgh coal seam.
