Strange phone call, reportedly from a debt collection agency. The caller knew my name and address. She was rude and abrupt, and said this" was about lab tests from June 2023." She said I had received multiple letters and did not believe me when I said I never received any such letters.. Said I owed over $500 for lab tests at a lab I've never been to and that probably these tests were outsourced from a doctor or hospital. I said I haven't been to a hospital in over 20 years ,my doctor sends me to a local lab, and that I hadn't had any labs done in June 2023. When I asked for the exact date of service and the actual procedures performed the person referred me to a supervisor. The supervisor refused to provide me any information when I said I would not be paying over the phone without verification and that I was going to call my health insurer to check on this. I asked for the exact date of service and the actual tests provided in order to call my insurer.. She would not give me that information but mentioned the name of a lab that was not the same as the original caller had said, which I thought was odd. She then accused me of being rude and said she wouldn't talk to me any further and hung up. I called back to see if this was a legitimate number. When it was answered I asked for the name of the business. This matched the name of the business from the first caller, but the person answering the phone seemed to know about the call as , without asking my name, she said because I was rude to the agent no one would talk to me and she hung up too! So I called the only lab I use and they had no record of any outstanding debt, nor labs done in June 2023; their representative said they don't send outsource labs. Then called my health insurer. The advocate thought it was a scam as they had no claims from either of the labs that had been mentioned, and as neither lab nor the collection agency name came up on a Google search. The advocate from the health insurer asked me to hold while she called the number of this supposed debt collection agency and they hung up on her too. I also called the state office which licenses collection agencies, and the person there said they had no record of that business name, and she thought it was a scam; it would be very unusual that a collection agency wouldn't provide the details in an attempt to settle a debtt. I don't know if this is a scam or a case of identity theft but I've never had such a strange phone call.
