Established as an independent city in 1851, Baltimore was founded as a port in 1706 and town in 1729 to support the tobacco trade, and briefly served as the nation's capital from December 1776 to February 1777 during the Revolutionary War. The city's pivotal role in the War of 1812 is commemorated by the Battle of Baltimore and Fort McHenry bombardment, during which Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner," designated as the national anthem in 1931. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, built in 1830 as the nation's oldest, established the city as a major transportation hub and manufacturing center, with Baltimore's Inner Harbor serving as the second-leading U.S. port of entry for immigrants after Ellis Island. Today, Baltimore has shifted to a service-oriented economy anchored by Johns Hopkins Hospital and University, and is home to the Orioles and Ravens sports franchises, while boasting more historic architecture per capita than any other U.S. city with over 65,000 designated historic buildings and 66 National Register Historic Districts. Today, Salisbury functions as a diverse commercial and cultural hub, attracting various businesses and government offices while hosting attractions including the Salisbury Zoo, eight National Register historic buildings, and monthly 3rd Friday celebrations of local music and arts. Located on the Atlantic Coastal Plain roughly 106 miles from Baltimore and 119 miles from Washington, D.C., Salisbury experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Founded as a farming community in 1720 when Charles Calvert granted 1,140 acres to Edward Hall, Aberdeen was named after Aberdeen, Scotland by the Rogers family in honor of their cousin, the Earl of Aberdeen, who became British Prime Minister in 1852. The city was incorporated as a town in 1892 and became a city in 1992 with the election of its first mayor, Ruth Elliot, under a new charter establishing an elected mayor form of government. Historic attractions include the B.&O. Railroad Station, designed by renowned architect Frank Furness and built in 1885, along with six properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the James B. Baker House and Poplar Hill. Located on the northern edge of Upper Chesapeake Bay at the convergence of the Old Post Road between Philadelphia and Alexandria with the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad, Aberdeen developed from a small crossroads into a significant regional hub after the railroad identified it as a potential watering station in 1835.
