Oxnard is the most populous city in Ventura County and the 22nd-most-populous in California, located approximately 60 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles on the Central Coast. Incorporated on June 30, 1903, the city was founded by Henry T. Oxnard, who established a $2 million sugar beet factory in 1899 with landmark twin smokestacks that operated until 1959. With a 2020 population of 202,063, Oxnard sits at the western edge of the fertile Oxnard Plain and is a major Southern California transportation hub served by Amtrak, Union Pacific, Metrolink, and Greyhound. The city is known for its agricultural production of strawberries and lima beans, proximity to the Oxnard Oil Field and West Montalvo Oil Field, and its historic defense-based aerospace and communications industries developed around nearby naval bases Point Mugu and Port Hueneme. Oxnard's economy and development have been shaped by its role as a regional agricultural and industrial center, with mid-20th-century growth including projects like Channel Islands Harbor, developed by influential businessman Martin V. Smith. Camarillo is a city in Ventura County, California, with a population of 70,741 according to the 2020 census, representing a 5,540-person increase from 2010. Named after brothers Juan Camarillo, Jr. and Adolfo Camarillo, prominent Californios who owned Rancho Calleguas, the city was formally laid out around 1910 centered on St. Mary Magdalen Church. The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people for thousands of years, with documented villages like Simo'mo and Kayɨwɨš, before becoming part of the Mexican land grant system in 1837. Early 20th-century Camarillo's economy relied primarily on agricultural production - orange, lemon, and walnut groves - and the Camarillo State Mental Hospital, which became the region's largest employer until California State University Channel Islands relocated to its former grounds. The city's modern development accelerated after World War II when nearby military installations including Naval Air Station Point Mugu and Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme opened, bringing increased population and economic activity to the region. Newbury Park is a populated place in Ventura County, California, located in the northwestern Greater Los Angeles Area approximately 35 miles from Downtown Los Angeles and 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, with about 28,000 residents living within the western Thousand Oaks city limits where it comprises 40 percent of the total land area. The neighborhood, situated in the Conejo Valley at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu and Westlake Village, is known for its mild year-round climate, scenic mountains, and environmental preservation. Named after founder Egbert Starr Newbury, the first postmaster in the Conejo Valley in 1875, the area was originally called Timberville before Newbury purchased 2,200 acres of former rancho land and established his ranch there, though he returned to Michigan in 1877 after bankruptcy. The Newbury Park area has significant archaeological importance, with evidence of Chumash habitation spanning 6,000 to 10,000 years, including three ancient villages settled 2,000 years ago and numerous burial sites containing artifacts now displayed at the Stagecoach Inn Museum alongside mammoth fossils unearthed in 1961 and 1971. The community comprises ZIP code 91320 and features scenic routes and trails connecting to Malibu through the Santa Monica Mountains.
