Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States with 3.87 million residents within city limits as of 2025, and serves as the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Southern California within a metropolitan area of 12.9 million people. Located in the Los Angeles Basin adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and covering approximately 469 square miles, it is the county seat of Los Angeles County, the nation's most populous county with 9.86 million residents, and attracts over 3.6 million visitors annually as the third-most visited U.S. city. Originally inhabited by the Tongva people, Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, became part of Mexico in 1821, and was incorporated as a U.S. municipality on April 4, 1850, following the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city experienced rapid growth after the discovery of oil in the 1890s and the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, establishing it as a major economic center. Los Angeles maintains a diverse economy anchored by film and television production, features one of the Americas' busiest container ports, boasts the world's largest collection of Frank Gehry-designed architecture, and generated a gross metropolitan product exceeding $1.295 trillion in 2024, ranking third globally behind New York and Tokyo, while hosting the Summer Olympics in 1932, 1984, and 2028. Burbank is a city in the southeastern San Fernando Valley, located 7 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles County, with a population of 105,833 as of 2025. Named after David Burbank, who established a sheep ranch there in 1867 after purchasing over 9,200 acres, the city is known as the "Media Capital of the World" and hosts major entertainment headquarters including Warner Bros. Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, and Cartoon Network Studios, along with The CW broadcast network. The city's rich history traces back to the Tongva people and includes Spanish colonial land grants including Rancho San Rafael (granted to Jose Maria Verdugo in 1784) and Rancho Providencia (created in 1821), and the Hollywood Burbank Airport was home to Lockheed's Skunk Works, which produced advanced aircraft including U-2 spy planes. Burbank also contains the largest IKEA in the United States and sits only six miles northeast of Hollywood. Canoga Park is a neighborhood in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley, originally named Owensmouth when founded on March 30, 1912, by the Los Angeles Suburban Home Company under developer Hobart Johnstone Whitley, before annexing to Los Angeles in 1917 and renaming to Canoga Park in 1931. The area was historically inhabited for approximately 8,000 years by Tongva-Fernandeño and Chumash-Venturaño tribes, and later served as part of Mission San Fernando Rey de España from 1797 to 1846 before becoming part of Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando. In the 1860s, Isaac Lankershim and Isaac Van Nuys's San Fernando Homestead Association established seven wheat ranch operations and became the first to ship California wheat to Europe, with Alfred Workman's 13,000-acre ranch becoming the westernmost operation in 1869. Eucalyptus trees introduced to the San Fernando Valley by Albert Workman from Australia became so widespread that they are considered the parents of all eucalyptus trees in Southern California. The neighborhood's development was driven by land speculation tied to the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, with prominent investors including Los Angeles Times owners Harry Chandler and Harrison Gray Otis.
