Conroe is the county seat of Montgomery County, Texas, located approximately 40 miles north of Houston and serving as a principal city in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area, with a 2024 population of 114,581. Named after Isaac Conroe, a Union Cavalry officer and lumberman who founded a sawmill in 1881, the city built its early economy on the lumber industry harvesting local piney woods before the 1931 discovery of the Conroe Oil Field by George W. Lufkin is the county seat and largest city in Angelina County, Texas, located in Deep East Texas approximately 60 miles west of the Louisiana border, with a population of around 34,000 as of 2024. Founded in 1882 as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway and officially incorporated on October 15, 1890, Lufkin was named for Abraham P. Lufkin, a cotton merchant and father-in-law of the railroad's president. The city's economy flourished through three distinct eras: the railroad era (1882-1890), a timber boom driven by the Angelina Lumber Company, and a golden era of expansion marked by industrialization through Lufkin Industries and Southland Paper Mill. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Lufkin underwent cultural expansion with improvements to education and public amenities, including new museums and a library. Prominent early Anglo settlers included Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a Texas Revolution veteran and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence who served as one of Texas's first U.S. Senators, and Sam Houston, who lived there for four years before the revolution and opened a law office downtown.
