Cabin John is an unincorporated census-designated place in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, just 4 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., with a 2020 population of 2,459 overlooking the Potomac River. The community takes its name from Captain John's Run, documented in 1715 land records as Cabin John Creek, and is home to the Union Arch Bridge, built between 1857 and 1864 as the longest single-span masonry arch bridge in the world at completion and still the longest in the United States. The historic Cabin John Bridge Hotel, constructed in 1870 adjacent to the arch bridge, became a lavish destination for Washington's elite politicians and social figures during its heyday in the 1890s to early 1900s before being destroyed by fire in 1931. Bordered to the west by Carderock, where the U.S. Navy built the David Taylor Model Basin (1936-1939), one of the world's largest ship design test facilities, Cabin John contains sections of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal including locks 8 through 12 and serves as the access point to Plummers Island. The neighborhood, once connected by streetcar to Georgetown (1897-1930s) and Bethesda (c. 1900-1960), features unique housing developments including Cabin John Gardens, a cooperative single-family neighborhood built on the former hotel site from land purchased from the hotel owner's widow. Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County, Maryland, located in the Washington metropolitan area with a 2020 population of 67,117, making it the fourth-largest incorporated city in Maryland. Situated in the Piedmont region and crossed by Rock Creek, Cabin John Creek, and Watts Branch, the area attracted semi-nomadic Native Americans as early as 8000 BC, with documented prehistoric sites and artifacts several thousand years old within the city's present boundaries. The settlement emerged along the Sinequa Trail (now downtown Rockville) and gained prominence when Major General Edward Braddock stopped at Owen's Ordinary on April 14, 1755, during his mission from George Town to the western frontier. Rockville became the county seat when Montgomery County was established on September 6, 1776, carved from the division of Frederick County by Thomas Sprigg Wootton's proposal. Today, Rockville forms the core of the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor alongside Gaithersburg and Bethesda, housing numerous software and biotechnology companies, federal government institutions, and serving as a major retail hub with upscale regional shopping centers. Myersville is a town in Frederick County, Maryland with a population of 1,748 according to the 2020 census, covering 1.02 square miles in a rural area. Incorporated in 1904 with just 150 residents, the town grew significantly after Interstate 70 was extended through it in 1968 and its boundaries expanded in 1981. The town is historically notable for the January 4, 1919 fire that destroyed many downtown buildings and for the October 2002 capture of Washington D.C. snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo at a rest stop on westbound I-70. Located at the source of Catoctin Creek, Myersville sits at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Maryland Route 17, providing primary road access to Baltimore to the east and Pittsburgh to the west. The Peter P. Grossnickel Farm and Henry Brandenburg House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
