Floral Park is an incorporated village in western Nassau County on Long Island, New York, with a population of 16,172 as of the 2020 census. Originally known as East Hinsdale and formerly marked by flower farms, the area was renamed Floral Park in the 1870s by entrepreneur John Lewis Childs, who arrived in 1874, started America's first seed catalog business, and served as the village's first president after its incorporation in 1908. Childs' mail order business grew so dramatically that by 1903 the village boasted over 200 acres of his flower beds and a post office comparable in volume to those of Chicago, Baltimore, and Boston. The Long Island Rail Road renamed its station to Floral Park in 1888, and later elevated it through the village in 1960 as part of a grade-crossing elimination project. Floral Park became part of Nassau County in 1899 and built its Village Hall in 1936, covering 1.4 square miles with borders adjacent to New York City and several other incorporated Nassau County villages. Garden City is a village in Nassau County on Long Island, New York, with a population of 23,272 as of the 2020 census, located primarily within the town of Hempstead. Founded in 1869 by Irish-born millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart on the Hempstead Plains, the community was developed around the acclaimed Garden City Hotel, designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1895, and connected by the Central Railroad of Long Island that opened in 1873. Stewart's wife Cornelia established the Cathedral Schools and the Gothic Cathedral of the Incarnation, completed in 1885 and now the center of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, while the Garden City Company (founded by Stewart's heirs in 1893) donated land for Nassau County's government buildings in nearby Mineola. The village, which incorporated in 1919, became a major publishing hub when Doubleday, Page, and Co. - one of the world's leading publishers - relocated to Garden City in 1910 and built its own train station called Country Life Press. Originally dismissed as "Stewart's Folly" for its sparse early population, Garden City grew steadily through the railroad and automobile era to become the anchor community of the Greater Garden City area. Hicksville is a hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County on Long Island, New York, with a population of 43,869 according to the 2020 census. Founded in 1837 when Valentine Hicks, son-in-law of abolitionist Elias Hicks and eventually president of the Long Island Rail Road, established a railroad station stop that evolved from a hotel into a real estate and agricultural hub - initially producing cucumbers for Heinz before shifting to potatoes. The hamlet experienced rapid suburban growth following World War II, though a 1953 incorporation attempt with 6,242 resident signatures ultimately failed, leaving it under Town of Oyster Bay control. Historically home to major manufacturing operations including the Rubber Company of America (founded 1945) and various equipment manufacturers, Hicksville developed as a significant bedroom community and retail center due to its major Long Island Rail Road hub on North Broadway in central Nassau County. Covering 6.8 square miles with a borderline hot-summer humid continental and humid subtropical climate, Hicksville continues to serve as a major transportation and commercial hub for the New York City metropolitan area.
