Eugene is Oregon's second-largest city and the county seat of Lane County, located at the southern end of the Willamette Valley approximately 110 miles south of Portland and 50 miles east of the Oregon Coast. With a 2020 census population of 176,654 covering 44.21 square miles, Eugene anchors the state's second-largest metropolitan statistical area after Portland. Home to the University of Oregon, Bushnell University, and Lane Community College, Eugene is known for its natural environment, outdoor recreation (bicycling, hiking, running, rafting, and kayaking), arts focus, and nickname "Track Town, USA," reflecting its hosting of the 2022 World Athletics Championship. The city's economy and identity were significantly shaped by Nike Corporation, which originated there, and it maintains an official motto of "A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors." Eugene was first settled by the Chifin band of Kalapuyans, whose ancestors may have inhabited the area for up to 10,000 years before European and French fur trader settlement in the early 19th century led to devastating epidemics and population decline among Native communities. Bend is the county seat of Deschutes County in central Oregon, located east of the Cascade Range on the Deschutes River, and has a 2020 population of 99,178, making it the sixth-most populous city in Oregon. Originally established as a logging town after its 1905 incorporation, Bend was named from a fordable river crossing point, with the post office shortening "Farewell Bend Ranch" to simply "Bend" in 1886. The city's economy shifted dramatically in 1950 when major logging companies consolidated due to timber depletion, prompting a transition toward tourism and recreation. Today, Bend is a premier outdoor recreation destination in the high desert, bordered by Deschutes National Forest and featuring world-class mountain biking, skiing, fishing, and climbing, along with breweries and the last operating Blockbuster video rental store. With its metropolitan area population of 247,493 residents, Bend serves as Central Oregon's largest city and continues to experience significant growth as a retirement and recreation hub. Albany is a city in and county seat of Linn County, Oregon, located in the Willamette Valley at the confluence of the Calapooia and Willamette rivers, making it the 11th most populous city in the state with a 2020 population of 56,472. European settlement began in 1845 when farmer Abner Hackleman arrived from Iowa, followed in 1847 by brothers Walter and Thomas Monteith from New York, who named the city after their hometown and established the town site in 1848 by purchasing 320 acres for $400 and a horse. The area was originally inhabited by the Kalapuya people, who called it Takenah, but the population was devastated by smallpox in 1782-83 and malaria between 1830-1833, reducing their numbers by approximately 90 percent and clearing the way for European American settlement. Albany's economy is centered on farming, manufacturing, retail trade, health care, and social assistance, with the city actively revitalizing its downtown area through the Central Albany Revitalization Area initiative. The city offers residents and visitors access to over 30 parks and trails, cultural events including the Northwest Art & Air Festival and River Rhythms, and is governed by a council-manager system with a professional city manager.
