Jackson is a city in Madison County, Tennessee, located 70 miles east of Memphis and 130 miles southwest of Nashville, serving as a regional trade center for West Tennessee with a 2020 population of 68,205. Originally named Alexandria and renamed in 1822 to honor General Andrew Jackson, the city was established by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1821 as a county seat and became home to the Tennessee Supreme Court's West Tennessee courthouse when the court was established in 1834. The antebellum economy centered on cotton cultivation, and beginning in 1851, Jackson became a major railroad hub connecting northern, southern, eastern, and western markets, which attracted significant railroad employment through the late 19th century and into the 1960s when 15 daily passenger trains served the city. The area was historically occupied by the Chickasaw people before European-American settlement began along the Forked Deer River before 1820, primarily by migrants from Virginia and Kentucky. Though railroad industry restructuring reduced passenger service and jobs, Jackson's economy has since diversified with major manufacturing in the region. Paris is the county seat of Henry County, Tennessee, located 113 miles south of Nashville via Clarksville, with a 2020 population of 10,316 residents. Founded in December 1822 when five commissioners selected a 50-acre site donated by Joseph Blythe and Peter Ruff, Paris was incorporated on September 30, 1823, making it the first incorporated town in West Tennessee, predating Memphis by nearly four years. The city was named after Paris, France in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, the American Revolutionary War hero. Paris served historically as a trade center for the agricultural county's cotton economy and enslaved labor force, and developed a significant African American community that experienced largely peaceful school and business integration beginning in the 1960s. Today, Paris is known for its iconic 70-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower located in the southern part of the city. Dyersburg is the county seat of Dyer County in northwest Tennessee, located 79 miles northeast of Memphis on the Forked Deer River, with a 2020 population of 16,164. Established in 1823 when John McIver and Joel H. Dyer donated 60 acres for the county seat, the town was surveyed in 1825 with 86 lots and named for Colonel Robert Henry Dyer, Joel's father. The city's early prosperity depended on its strategic position as a steamboat navigation hub on the Forked Deer River, with the Grey Eagle's successful maiden voyage in 1836 cementing its status as a river town. Dyersburg experienced significant industrial growth beginning in 1879 with timber shipments from A. M. Stevens Lumber Company to St. Louis markets, followed by the establishment of a sawmill in 1880, planing mill in 1885, and the Bank of Dyersburg in 1880. During the Civil War, Union forces won several skirmishes near Dyersburg, including engagements in August 1862 with the 6th Illinois Cavalry Regiment and the Skirmish at Dyersburg on January 30, 1863.
