The city was the site of the Battle of Fredericksburg and Second Battle of Fredericksburg during the American Civil War, with these battlefields preserved in the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Tourism drives the economy with approximately 1.5 million annual visitors to battlefields, museums, galleries, and historical sites, while major employers include the University of Mary Washington, Mary Washington Healthcare, and GEICO. Originally named "Rocktown," Harrisonburg was established by Thomas Harrison in 1737 on over 12,000 acres and officially incorporated as an independent city in 1916 after receiving its present name.
