Davenport is the third-most populous city in Iowa with 101,724 residents at the 2020 census, serving as the county seat of Scott County and located along the Mississippi River on Iowa's eastern border. Founded on May 14, 1836, by Antoine Le Claire and named for George Davenport, the city experienced significant industrial and population growth from 1860 to 1980, averaging 760 new residents annually through diverse manufacturing including locomotives, meat-packing, and Caterpillar equipment. As the largest city in the Quad Cities metropolitan area (population 384,324), Davenport hosts St. Ambrose University and Palmer College of Chiropractic, where the first chiropractic adjustment occurred, along with major cultural events including the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, Mississippi Valley Fair, Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, and the internationally recognized 7-mile Bix 7 foot race. The city is vulnerable to Mississippi River flooding due to its outdated 1919 flood wall, unlike Rock Island and Bettendorf which built modern levees in 1970 and the 1980s respectively, as highlighted during the 2019 flood. Davenport is served by three interstates (I-80, I-74, I-280) and features the Quad Cities River Bandits minor-league baseball team, 50 parks, and over 20 miles of recreational paths. Dubuque is a city of 59,667 residents in Dubuque County, Iowa, located along the Mississippi River at the tri-state junction of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Founded by French-Canadian pioneer Julien Dubuque in 1785 and officially chartered in 1833, the city initially prospered through lead mining until the 1830s, then became a major timber, boat-building, and railroad hub, with the Diamond Jo Line establishing its shipyard at Eagle Point in 1878 and becoming the city's largest employer by 1880. Situated in the Driftless Area with distinctive hilly topography, Dubuque ranked among the 100 largest U.S. urban centers between 1860 and 1880 and developed into a significant Catholic cultural center following large-scale German, Irish, and Luxembourgish immigration in the 19th century. Today, the city hosts five higher education institutions and serves as a regional tourist destination known for its historic architecture, casinos, and riverside location, with its economy diversified across manufacturing, health care, publishing, and financial services. Muscatine is the county seat of Muscatine County, Iowa, located along the Mississippi River with a population of 23,797 according to the 2020 census. Founded as a trading post in 1833 by representatives of Colonel George Davenport, the city was originally incorporated as Bloomington in 1839 before being renamed to Muscatine to reduce mail confusion. The name likely derives from either the Mascouten Native American tribe or the Meskwaki indigenous people, though Major William Williams claimed in 1849 it meant "Fire Island" in the Siouan language. As the principal city of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area with a combined population of 54,184, Muscatine served as an important Mississippi River trading hub and was home to Iowa's largest black community from the 1840s through the Civil War, where notable abolitionist Alexander G. Clark Sr. achieved school desegregation in 1868.
