Philadelphia, the sixth-most populous U.S. city with 1.60 million residents at the 2020 census, is located in Pennsylvania and anchors the Delaware Valley metropolitan area of 6.33 million people, the nation's ninth-largest. Founded in 1682 by English Quaker William Penn, the city served as the birthplace of American independence, hosting the Continental Congresses and the Declaration of Independence signing on July 4, 1776, before functioning as the nation's first capital from 1775 to 1800. Known for its influential role in American culture, music, and higher education - boasting 17 universities and colleges and 67 National Historic Landmarks including Independence Hall - Philadelphia hosts more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other U.S. city and maintains a passionate sports culture with five professional teams. The metropolitan area's economy generated $557.6 billion in gross product as of 2023, supported by 13 Fortune 500 headquarters, a "Cellicon Valley" biotechnology sector specializing in cancer immunotherapies, and the nation's oldest stock exchange, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, now owned by Nasdaq. Philadelphia's strategic transportation infrastructure includes 30th Street Station, the third-busiest Amtrak hub with over 4.1 million passengers in 2023, plus Philadelphia International Airport, a major seaport, and Interstate 95 access along the U.S. East Coast. Fort Washington is a census-designated place and suburb of Philadelphia located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, situated entirely within Upper Dublin Township as of 2020, with a population of 5,446 at the 2010 census. The area was originally settled by German immigrants beginning in 1728, including Philip Engard, and became known as Engardtown in the mid-18th century before being renamed after General George Washington's encampment there following the October 4, 1777, Battle of Germantown during the American Revolutionary War. Fort Washington witnessed the Battle of White Marsh between December 5-8, 1777, and is now home to Fort Washington State Park commemorating this Revolutionary War site. The region is known for the catastrophic Great Train Wreck of July 17, 1856, when two North Pennsylvania Railroad trains collided near Sandy Run station, killing at least 59 people instantly, many of them children from a Philadelphia church picnic. Today, Fort Washington is primarily an economic center anchored by the Fort Washington Office Park, a 536-acre complex containing over 6 million square feet across 65+ buildings and housing offices for more than 100 companies including Honeywell, Aetna, AccuWeather, Genworth Financial, and a Temple University campus. Langhorne Borough is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, located approximately six miles west of the Delaware River with a 2020 census population of 1,643. Originally known as Attleboro, the settlement began in the 17th century at the intersection of Lenni-Lenape paths and was renamed in 1876 for Jeremiah Langhorne, a former chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The town developed as a crucial transportation hub between Philadelphia and Trenton, serving as Bucks County's stagecoach center and growing into an important trade and commerce center from the 18th through 19th centuries. The arrival of the North Pennsylvania Railroad in 1876 further shaped the community, with the Langhorne Train Station serving the area. While Sesame Place is physically located in nearby Middletown Township, it uses Langhorne's ZIP code of 19047 as its mailing address.
