Miami is a coastal city in South Florida and the second-most populous city in Florida with 442,241 residents at the 2020 census, serving as the county seat of Miami-Dade County and anchoring a metropolitan area of 6.39 million people that ranks as the eighth-largest in the United States. The city boasts the third-largest skyline in the U.S. with over 300 high-rises, 70 of which exceed 491 feet, and functions as a major international center for finance, commerce, culture, and trade with a 2023 metropolitan GDP of $533.674 billion. Miami was named after the Miami River, derived from Mayaimi, the historic name of Lake Okeechobee, and was uniquely founded by Julia Tuttle, a wealthy citrus grower and Cleveland native, in the late 19th century after the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 destroyed crops elsewhere in Florida. With a 70.2 percent Hispanic and Latino population, Miami has earned the nickname "Gateway to Latin America" and "Capital of Latin America," and hosts PortMiami, the world's busiest cruise port, along with Jackson Memorial Hospital, the nation's largest hospital with 1,547 beds. The Miami metropolitan area is the second-most visited in the United States after New York City, attracting over four million visitors in 2022, and ranked as the third-richest city globally in a 2018 UBS study of 77 world cities. Homestead is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, located 26 miles southwest of Miami between Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park, with a population of 80,737 as of the 2020 census. The city originated in 1898 when the Florida East Coast Railway planned an extension to Key West and established a station 30 miles south of Miami, which was named "Homestead" at the suggestion of FEC vice president James E. Ingraham. Incorporated in 1913, Homestead is the second oldest city in Miami-Dade County and developed as both a Miami suburb and major agricultural hub, with the historic Redland Hotel - built by settler William D. Horne in 1904 - still standing today. The city experienced significant devastation from Category 5 Hurricane Andrew on August 24, 1992, and in 2013 officially designated itself the gateway community for Biscayne and Everglades National Parks. Homestead comprises 14.4 square miles and serves as a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which had a population of 6,138,333 in 2020. Marathon is a city in the middle of the Florida Keys in Monroe County, Florida, with a 2020 population of 9,689, up from 8,297 in 2010, and was incorporated in 1999. The city's name originated from the Florida East Coast Railroad in the late 19th century, either from workers' complaints about the relentless construction pace or from playwright Witter Bynner's Byron-inspired suggestion referencing Marathon and the sea. Located 50 miles northeast of Key West and 54 miles southwest of Key Largo via U.S. Route 1, Marathon occupies multiple keys including Boot Key, Vaca Key, and Knight's Key, spanning from the Seven Mile Bridge (Mile Marker 47) to Tom's Harbor Bridge (Mile Marker 61). The city experienced significant damage from Hurricane Irma's September 10, 2017 landfall and received emergency relief supplies from Air National Guard C-130 transport planes starting September 11. Marathon has a tropical savanna climate with no record of snow or frost and two distinct seasons: hot and wet from May through October, and warm and dry from November through April.
