Minneapolis is Minnesota's most populous city with 429,954 residents as of 2020, located in Hennepin County at the center of the state near the Upper Mississippi River and adjacent to the state capital Saint Paul, forming the Twin Cities metropolitan area with 3.69 million people. Nicknamed the "City of Lakes" for its thirteen lakes and abundant waterways including the Mississippi River, Minneapolis was originally inhabited by the Dakota people and later developed as a European settlement around Saint Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River. In the 19th century, Minneapolis became the world's lumber and flour milling capital, and today hosts the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and is the birthplace of major corporations including General Mills, Pillsbury, Target Corporation, and Thermo King. The city features prominent cultural institutions including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, and Guthrie Theater, along with four professional sports teams, the University of Minnesota's main campus, and musician Prince's iconic First Avenue nightclub. Governed by a mayor-council system under Mayor Jacob Frey since 2018 and dominated by the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Minneapolis is served by Metro Transit and the international airport at its southern border. Saint Paul is the capital of Minnesota and county seat of Ramsey County, with a 2020 population of 311,527, making it Minnesota's second-largest city and the 63rd most populous in the United States. Together with Minneapolis, Saint Paul forms the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the third most populous region in the Midwest with approximately 3.7 million residents. The city was established as the Minnesota Territory's capital near Dakota Sioux settlements in November 1849 and named after a log chapel founded by Lucien Galtier, rising to prominence in the 19th century as headquarters for James J. Hill's Great Northern Railway transcontinental railroad empire. Saint Paul hosts major cultural institutions including the Science Museum of Minnesota and Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, along with professional sports teams including the Minnesota Wild, Minnesota United FC, and minor-league St. Paul Saints. The Minnesota State Capitol overlooks downtown Saint Paul and the Mississippi River, while the city's history spans from Hopewell settlements 2,000 years ago through Dakota Sioux habitation until 1837 to its founding as a fur trading post following the 1805 Zebulon Pike land negotiations and 1819 establishment of Fort Snelling.
