New Orleans, located along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, is the most populous city in the state with 383,997 residents in 2020 and the twelfth-most populous in the Southeastern United States, serving as a major port for the Gulf Coast region. Founded in 1718 by French colonists as the territorial capital of French Louisiana, the city became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and was the third-most populous U.S. city by 1840. Renowned for its distinctive Creole cuisine, music heritage, unique dialects, and the annual Mardi Gras festival, New Orleans is centered around the architecturally distinct French Quarter and has earned the nickname "Hollywood South" for its prominence in film and pop culture. The city faces significant flood vulnerability due to its low elevation and proximity to multiple water bodies, protected by complex levee and drainage systems installed by state and federal authorities. Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in August 2005, flooding over 80% of the city and displacing thousands of residents, though subsequent redevelopment efforts have led to population recovery. Kenner is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, and the sixth-most populous city in the state with a population of 66,448 at the 2020 census, making it the largest incorporated suburb of New Orleans. Founded in 1855 by Minor Kenner on three former plantation properties, the city developed from swampland through rapid suburban expansion during the 1960s following the construction of Interstate 10 and improvements to Veterans Memorial Highway. The city covers 15.2 square miles bordered by Lake Pontchartrain to the north and the Mississippi River to the south, with notable historical events including bare-knuckle heavyweight boxing champion "Gypsy" Jem Mace's victory on May 10, 1870, and the tragic crash of Pan Am Flight 759 in 1982 that killed 145 people aboard and eight on the ground. Kenner's demographics have shifted significantly, with the Hispanic and Latino population growing to 30.01% by 2020, reflecting increased Latino business development throughout the city since 2011. Lafitte is an unincorporated census-designated place in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, located 27 miles south of New Orleans along Bayou Barataria at the southern end of Louisiana Highway 45, with a 2020 population of 1,014 residents. The community, which first appeared in the 1970 census and became an official CDP in 1980, is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner metropolitan statistical area and covers 6.4 square miles with nearly a quarter of its area consisting of water. Fishing is the major economic driver and cultural cornerstone of Lafitte, reflecting its bayou location and heritage. As of 2020, the population is 80.87% non-Hispanic white, 9.17% two or more races, 5.82% Hispanic or Latino, with a median household income of $58,375 and a poverty rate of 19.2%.
