Syracuse is a city in central New York and the county seat of Onondaga County, with a population of 148,620 and a metropolitan area of 662,057, making it the fifth-most populated city in the state. Formally established in 1820 and named after the classical Greek city of Syracuse in Sicily for its similar natural features, the city earned the nickname "The Salt City" from its abundant brine springs, which made it a major salt producer from the late 1700s through the early 1900s. Historically functioning as a major crossroads - first between the Erie Canal and its branches, then the New York Central Railroad network in the mid-19th century - Syracuse today sits at the interchange of I-81 and I-90 with Central New York's largest airport serving a five-county region of over one million people. The city is home to Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, SUNY ESF, Le Moyne College, and Onondaga Community College, establishing it as the economic and educational center of Central New York. Syracuse also hosts Destiny USA, the largest shopping mall in New York and the 10th largest in the country, along with major convention facilities. Utica is the county seat of Oneida County in New York with a 2020 population of 65,283, making it the state's tenth-most populous city, located 95 miles west-northwest of Albany on the Mohawk River at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains. Originally inhabited by the Mohawk Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy and established at the site of Old Fort Schuyler in 1758, the city became a major settlement for European-American immigrants following the American Revolution. During the 19th century, Utica thrived as a layover between Albany and Syracuse on the Erie and Chenango Canals and New York Central Railroad, developing into a worldwide hub for the textile manufacturing industry. Like other Rust Belt cities, Utica experienced significant economic decline in the mid-20th century due to industrial offshoring, textile mill closures, and job relocation to suburbs and Syracuse. Today, the city's low cost of living has attracted refugees from around the world, spurring growth in its colleges, universities, and cultural institutions. Lyons is a town in Wayne County, New York, serving as the county seat with a population of 5,682 as of the 2010 census, named after Lyon, France. Located in south-central Wayne County on the Erie Canal, the town was formed in 1811 from the Town of Sodus and settled beginning around 1789 in an area originally called "The Forks." The Erie Canal reached Lyons by 1821, facilitating the growth of local industries such as the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company, which relocated to the town in 1841 and became economically significant. Lyons features two National Register of Historic Places listings - the Dipper Dredge No. 3 and Towar-Ennis Farmhouse and Barn Complex - and is home to Erie Canal Lock 28A, built around 1913, as part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The town spans 37.6 square miles with New York State Routes 14 and 31 intersecting in the hamlet of Lyons.
