Syracuse is a city in central New York and the county seat of Onondaga County, with a population of 148,620 and a metropolitan area of 662,057, making it the fifth-most populated city in the state. Formally established in 1820 and named after the classical Greek city of Syracuse in Sicily for its similar natural features, the city earned the nickname "The Salt City" from its abundant brine springs, which made it a major salt producer from the late 1700s through the early 1900s. Historically functioning as a major crossroads - first between the Erie Canal and its branches, then the New York Central Railroad network in the mid-19th century - Syracuse today sits at the interchange of I-81 and I-90 with Central New York's largest airport serving a five-county region of over one million people. The city is home to Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, SUNY ESF, Le Moyne College, and Onondaga Community College, establishing it as the economic and educational center of Central New York. Syracuse also hosts Destiny USA, the largest shopping mall in New York and the 10th largest in the country, along with major convention facilities. Utica is the county seat of Oneida County in New York with a 2020 population of 65,283, making it the state's tenth-most populous city, located 95 miles west-northwest of Albany on the Mohawk River at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains. Originally inhabited by the Mohawk Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy and established at the site of Old Fort Schuyler in 1758, the city became a major settlement for European-American immigrants following the American Revolution. During the 19th century, Utica thrived as a layover between Albany and Syracuse on the Erie and Chenango Canals and New York Central Railroad, developing into a worldwide hub for the textile manufacturing industry. Like other Rust Belt cities, Utica experienced significant economic decline in the mid-20th century due to industrial offshoring, textile mill closures, and job relocation to suburbs and Syracuse. Today, the city's low cost of living has attracted refugees from around the world, spurring growth in its colleges, universities, and cultural institutions. Watertown is the county seat of Jefferson County in northern New York, located approximately 25 miles south of the Thousand Islands and 5 miles east of where the Black River flows into Lake Ontario. First surveyed in 1795 and settled in March 1800 by pioneers attracted to the Black River's hydropower, the city was designated county seat in 1805, incorporated as a village in 1816, and became a city in 1869, developing into a major industrial center. With a 2020 population of 24,685 residents, Watertown is the largest city in New York's North Country and serves as the commercial and financial hub for the region, drawing significant business from Canadian shoppers located 30 miles away and summer tourists. The city's Public Square Historic District, created in 1805 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, anchors the downtown area, while proximity to Fort Drum military base 13 miles away provides important economic activity. Watertown experienced substantial decline from the mid-1960s onward as younger residents and businesses relocated to Chicago, resulting in the loss of over 7,000 residents by 2000 and demolition of historic structures, though the city remains a regional service and shopping destination.
