Charleston is the capital and most populous city of West Virginia, located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers in Kanawha County, with a population of 48,864 at the 2020 census and a metropolitan area of approximately 203,000 residents. Established in the late 18th century with Daniel Boone, Leonard Morris, and William Morris as original trustees, the city was formally incorporated in 1794 and became West Virginia's permanent state capital in 1885 following the state's separation from Virginia. The city's economy grew significantly through the 19th-century salt industry - with the nearby Kanawha Salines becoming the world's top salt producer by the early 1800s - and later expanded through coal mining, natural gas development (first well struck in 1815), and chemical manufacturing. Charleston is home to Yeager Airport, the University of Charleston, satellite campuses of West Virginia University and Marshall University, and the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The city is known for hosting the annual 15-mile Charleston Distance Run and remains a cultural and economic hub in the Appalachian region. Huntington is West Virginia's second-largest city with 46,842 residents (2020 census), located in Cabell and Wayne counties at the confluence of the Ohio and Guyandotte rivers in the southwestern part of the state. Founded in 1870 by railroad magnate Collis Potter Huntington as the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and one of the nation's first planned communities, the city rapidly industrialized after the railroad's 1871 completion, reaching a peak population of 86,353 in 1950 before declining 46% by 1990 due to post-World War II industrial shutdowns. Home to Marshall University (founded 1837), the Huntington Museum of Art, and historic Camden Park amusement park, the city serves as a vital transportation hub and scenic Appalachian locale. Huntington is home to the Port of Huntington Tri-State, the second-busiest inland port in the United States, and hosts the headquarters of CSX Transportation-Huntington Division, maintaining its significance in rail-to-river cargo transfer. The Huntington-Ashland metropolitan area spans seven counties across West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio with approximately 368,000 residents. Parkersburg is a city in Wood County, West Virginia, located at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers, serving as the county seat and fourth-most populous city in the state with a 2020 population of 29,749 and metro population of 89,490. Originally settled in the late 18th century as Newport and renamed Parkersburg in 1810 after a land grant to Alexander Parker for his Revolutionary War service, the city was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1820 and rechartered as a city in 1860. The construction of the B&O Railroad branch line in 1857 and the Parkersburg Bridge between 1868-1870 established it as a major transportation hub, particularly after the Camden Consolidated Oil Company - founded in 1866 by future U.S. Senator Johnson Newlon Camden and sold to Standard Oil in 1875 - made the city a leading oil refining center in the late 19th century. In the post-World War II era, Parkersburg became one of the Ohio Valley's leading industrial centers, producing chemicals, glass, tools, textiles, plastics, polymers, iron, and steel, further solidified by the 1954 relocation of the Bureau of the Public Debt to the city as a strategically secure location midway between Chicago and Washington, D.C. The city's strategic location, transportation infrastructure, and industrial heritage have shaped its role as a regional economic and administrative center.
