Nashville is the capital and most populous city in Tennessee, serving as the seat of Davidson County in Middle Tennessee on the Cumberland River, with a 2020 population of 689,447 making it the 20th-most populous city in the United States and the 35th-largest metropolitan area with over 2.15 million people. Founded in 1779 by explorers James Robertson and John Donelson at the site of the former French Lick settlement and named after Revolutionary War general Francis or Abner Nash, the city rapidly grew as a strategic port and 19th-century railroad center until it became the first Confederate state capital captured by Union forces in 1862. Since 1963, Nashville has operated under a consolidated city-county government with a mayor and 40-member metropolitan council overseeing six smaller municipalities, and it is home to the Tennessee Supreme Court's Middle Tennessee division. Commonly known as "Music City," Nashville is a global Gamma-class city and a major center for the music industry, particularly country music, while also hosting headquarters for major corporations like Bridgestone Americas, Hospital Corporation of America, and Asurion across healthcare, publishing, banking, automotive, and technology sectors. The city is home to six universities including Vanderbilt and Fisk University, earning it the nickname "Athens of the South," and is the home of three major professional sports teams: the Predators, Titans, and Nashville SC. Murfreesboro, the county seat of Rutherford County in Middle Tennessee, is located 34 miles southeast of Nashville and is home to 152,769 residents (estimated 173,625 in 2025), making it the state's sixth-most populous city and largest Nashville suburb. Originally settled in 1811 and named after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree, the city served as Tennessee's capital from 1818 to 1826 before losing that designation to Nashville. Murfreesboro has experienced explosive growth since the 1990s as one of America's fastest-growing cities and is both the geographic and population center of Tennessee. The city is notably home to Middle Tennessee State University, one of the state's largest undergraduate institutions, and hosts the Stones River National Battlefield, site of the December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863 Battle of Stones River, which resulted in 23,515 combined casualties and is considered the Civil War's bloodiest battle by casualty percentage. The city also features Fortress Rosecrans, the largest Civil War-era fortification covering 225 acres with eight lunettes, four redoubts, and connecting fortifications built as a Union supply depot. Franklin is the county seat of Williamson County, Tennessee, located approximately 21 miles south of Nashville and ranks as the seventh-most populous city in Tennessee with a 2020 population of 83,454. Founded on October 26, 1799, by Abram Maury Jr. and named after Benjamin Franklin, the city developed along the Harpeth River as a trading and judicial center for rural Williamson County's agricultural economy, which centered on tobacco, hemp, and livestock cultivation. Franklin was the site of the Second Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, during the Civil War, which resulted in nearly 10,000 casualties and temporarily converted 44 buildings to field hospitals; the Carter, Carnton, and Lotz houses from this era remain standing examples of the city's protected period architecture. Since 1980, northern Franklin has experienced rapid residential and commercial development while maintaining its older buildings and historic neighborhoods through protective city ordinances. The city is part of the Nashville metropolitan area and serves as a principal city of Middle Tennessee's modern service industry economy.
