Owensboro is the county seat of Daviess County and the fourth-most populous city in Kentucky, with a 2020 population of 60,183 located approximately 107 miles southwest of Louisville on U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 165. Native American settlement in the area dates back 12,000 years until the Shawnee were forced to vacate before the 18th century's end, with European settlement beginning in 1797 when frontiersman William Smeathers arrived, and the town formally established in 1817 as Owensborough (renamed Owensboro in 1893) after Colonel Abraham Owen. The city developed significant bourbon whiskey distilling operations, including the Glenmore Distillery Company (now owned by Sazerac) and the Green River Distilling Company (established 1885), both still operational today. Owensboro's manufacturing heritage included the Owensboro Wagon Company (established 1884), one of the nation's largest wagon manufacturers, as well as tobacco processing and early automobile manufacturing by the Ames Motor Car Company, which later shifted to furniture production. The city is historically notable as the site of the last public hanging in the United States on August 14, 1936, after which Kentucky abolished public executions. Bowling Green is the county seat of Warren County in Kentucky and the third-largest city in the state with a 2020 population of 72,294, anchoring a metropolitan area of 179,639 residents. Founded in 1798 by pioneers including Robert and George Moore and General Elijah Covington, the city was named after Bowling Green in New York City and served as the provisional capital of Confederate Kentucky from November 1861 until February 1862. The city's economy is anchored by major manufacturers including the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant, which has produced every Chevrolet Corvette since 1981, along with Spalding and Fruit of the Loom. Bowling Green is home to Western Kentucky University and the National Corvette Museum, both significant cultural and educational institutions. Steamboat commerce on the Barren River and the 1859 arrival of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad fueled the city's growth from its early agricultural origins into a major manufacturing and transportation hub. Paducah is a city in western Kentucky serving as the county seat of McCracken County and the most populous city in the Jackson Purchase region, with a 2020 population of 27,137 located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio rivers halfway between St. Louis and Nashville. First settled as "Pekin" around 1821 by James and William Pore, the town was laid out and renamed Paducah by explorer William Clark in 1827, likely named after the Comanche people known regionally as the Padoucas rather than from a Chickasaw chief as local tradition suggested. Formally established as a town in 1830 and incorporated as a city in 1838, Paducah developed a thriving "River and Rail" economy based on steamboat port facilities, dry docks, and its strategic position as a railway hub for the Illinois Central Railroad connecting Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1924, the Illinois Central Railroad began construction of their largest locomotive workshop in the nation at Paducah, completing an eleven-million-dollar project by 1927 that became the fourth-largest industrial plant in Kentucky and the city's largest employer with over 1,000 workers by 1938. Twenty blocks of downtown Paducah have been designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, and the metropolitan area encompassing five counties had a 2020 population of 103,481.
