Kansas City, Missouri is the largest city in Missouri by population and area, with 508,090 residents at the 2020 census, making it the 38th-most populous city in the United States and the sixth-most populous in the Midwest. Located on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Kansas River across Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Cass counties, the city was founded in the 1830s as a port and incorporated as the Town of Kansas on June 1, 1850, before being renamed Kansas City in 1889 to distinguish it from Kansas Territory. Encompassing approximately 319.03 square miles, Kansas City is the 25th-largest U.S. city by area and anchors a metropolitan region of 2.25 million residents that ranks 31st nationally. The city is celebrated for Kansas City jazz, the Vaudevillian Orpheum circuit theater heritage from the 1920s, the nickname "City of Fountains," professional sports teams (the Chiefs and Royals), and distinctive cuisine including Kansas City-style barbecue and strip steak. Major neighborhoods include River Market District, 18th and Vine District, and Country Club Plaza, while nearby suburbs span both Missouri and Kansas. St. Joseph is a city in Buchanan County, Missouri, located on the Missouri River approximately 30 miles north of Kansas City and 125 miles south of Omaha, with a 2020 population of 72,473, making it the 8th most populous city in Missouri. Founded in 1843 by French Canadian fur trader Joseph Robidoux, the city served as a crucial frontier outpost and "Gateway to the West," earning prominence as a jumping-off point for pioneers heading to the Oregon Territory in the mid-1800s. St. Joseph became historically significant as one of two endpoints of the Pony Express from April 1860 to late October 1861, providing fast mail service across territory inaccessible by rail. The city is notorious as the place where outlaw Jesse James was killed on April 3, 1882, at his home - now operated as a museum - inspiring the slogan "Where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended." Today, St. Joseph is home to Missouri Western State University, which enrolls over 3,800 students, and houses the Glore Psychiatric Museum, the world's largest museum of its kind documenting mental health treatment history. Lee's Summit is a city spanning Jackson and Cass counties in Missouri and serves as the sixth most populous city in Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area, with a 2020 census population of 101,108. Originally incorporated as Strother in 1865, the city was renamed Lee's Summit three years later, likely in honor of Civil War casualty Pleasant John Graves Lea, a prominent local resident. The region has been continuously inhabited for approximately 9,000 years, with archaeological evidence including Dalton tradition arrowheads and Kansas City Hopewell artifacts, and was acquired by the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 after the Osage ceded their Missouri territory by treaty in 1825. Lee's Summit transitioned from an agricultural community to a rapidly suburbanizing commuter suburb of Kansas City following World War II, developing a well-funded public school district that remains among the city's top employers alongside federal offices, healthcare facilities, and retail centers. The city features a historic downtown with an Amtrak station, human-made lake reservoirs, and numerous parks.
