Riverhead is a town in Suffolk County on Long Island's north shore, located 76 miles northeast of New York City, with a 2020 population of 35,902. As the county seat of Suffolk County since 1727, the town sits on the mouth of the Peconic River and serves as Long Island's agricultural center, containing 20,000 of the island's 35,000 farmland acres. The town was officially created on March 13, 1792, when the New York State Legislature separated it from Southold to accommodate the western region's residents who found travel to town meetings inconvenient. Early 20th-century Polish immigration established Polish Town within Riverhead, now home to the annual Polish Town Fair and a vibrant cultural community. The town encompasses 201.3 square miles including four year-round public beaches - Iron Pier, Wading River, and Reeves Beach - and marks the eastern terminus of the Long Island Expressway. Amityville is a village in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County on Long Island's South Shore, with a population of 9,500 according to the 2020 census. Huntington settlers arrived in 1653 seeking salt hay, and Chief Wyandanch granted the first land deed in 1658; the village was formally incorporated on March 3, 1894, after adopting its name around 1846. In the early 1900s, Amityville thrived as a tourist destination attracting prominent figures including Annie Oakley, Will Rogers, composer Benjamin Britten during World War II, and gangster Al Capone. The village gained international recognition as the setting for Jay Anson's 1977 novel The Amityville Horror, inspired by Ronald DeFeo Jr.'s 1974 murder of his six family members at 112 Ocean Avenue and the subsequent 28-day residence of George and Kathy Lutz in December 1975. The actual house has been renovated and its address changed to discourage tourism, while local residents and the Amityville Historical Society have largely avoided discussing these events. The Town of Babylon is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, located approximately 20 miles from New York City and bordered by Nassau County to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, with a 2020 census population of 218,223. Originally named New Babylon around 1803 by settlers Nathaniel Conklin and Nathan Kowitt after the ancient city of Babylon, the town was officially formed in 1872 through a partition of the Town of Huntington. Babylon encompasses 114.3 square miles, including portions of Jones Beach Island, Captree Island, and Fire Island, along with notable features such as Belmont Lake State Park, Captree State Park, Robert Moses State Park, and multiple beaches including Gilgo Beach and Cedar Beach. The town contains three incorporated villages - Babylon, Amityville, and Lindenhurst - plus numerous hamlets and communities spread across its 52.3 square miles of land and 62.0 square miles of water. Babylon is known for its extensive coastal geography, barrier islands, state parks, and beaches that make it a significant Long Island destination.
