Tulsa is the second-largest city in Oklahoma and the 48th-largest in the United States, with a population of 413,066 as of the 2020 census and serving as the principal municipality of a metropolitan area with 1.06 million residents. Founded on March 28, 1836, by Opothleyahola and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation as a settlement called Lochapoka and formally incorporated in 1898, the city was historically nicknamed the "Oil Capital of the World" and remains largely situated in Creek Nation territory alongside Cherokee and Osage Nation lands. Situated on the Arkansas River in northeast Oklahoma's "Green Country" region within the western foothills of the Ozark Mountains, Tulsa has diversified its economy beyond energy to include finance, aviation, telecommunications, and technology sectors. The city is recognized as Oklahoma's cultural and arts center, featuring two accredited art museums, full-time professional opera and ballet companies, and one of the nation's largest concentrations of art deco architecture. Home to NCAA Division I institutions University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University, plus secondary campuses of the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, Tulsa serves as the county seat of Oklahoma's most densely populated county. Bartlesville is a city in Washington County, Oklahoma, located 47 miles north of Tulsa and 18 miles south of the Kansas border, with a population of 37,290 at the 2020 census and serving as the county seat. The city was founded by Jacob Bartles in 1873 in Indian Territory, who established a trading post and various businesses before the town was incorporated in January 1897 and reached by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in 1899. Bartlesville is most notable as the birthplace and longtime headquarters of Phillips Petroleum Company, founded by Frank Phillips in 1905, which grew into a multi-billion dollar oil company before merging with Conoco in 2002 to form ConocoPhillips, with both successor companies retaining operations in the city. The city is home to one of two Lenape Native American tribes in Oklahoma and was the site of the first pay cable television experiment in 1957, when the Bartlesville Telemovie System broadcast The Pajama Game to 300 homes. Bartlesville is the primary city of the Bartlesville Micropolitan Area with a combined population of 51,843 as of 2018 and part of the larger Tulsa Combined Statistical Area. Tahlequah is a city in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, located at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in the Green Country region, and was established as the capital of the Cherokee Nation in 1839 following the Trail of Tears forced migration from the American Southeast. With a 2020 census population of 16,209, Tahlequah serves as the capital of both federally recognized Cherokee tribes based in Oklahoma - the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians - and is the county seat of Cherokee County. The city's name derives from the Cherokee word "daligwa" meaning grain or rice, referring to native grasses that grew in the region's flat open areas. Tahlequah rapidly developed in the 1840s, establishing four stores by 1842, hosting an intertribal council of 10,000 participants representing 21 tribes in 1843, and founding key institutions including the Cherokee Male Seminary in 1851 and the Cherokee Advocate newspaper in 1844. Northeastern State University's main campus is located in the city, which serves as a hub for Cherokee cultural and political heritage.
