Oklahoma City, the capital and most populous city in Oklahoma, is the 21st-largest U.S. city with a population of 681,054 as of the 2020 census and serves as the county seat of Oklahoma County. Founded during the historic Land Run of 1889, the city grew to over 10,000 residents within hours and became Oklahoma's major commercial hub after statehood in 1907, surpassing the territorial capital of Guthrie. Located at the convergence of I-35, I-40, and I-44 corridors in the state's Frontier Country region, Oklahoma City has developed into a major economic center powered by oil, natural gas, and petroleum industries, with additional employment from Tinker Air Force Base and the FAA's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center. The city is notable for hosting one of the world's largest livestock markets and was prominently featured in Nat King Cole's famous 1946 song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66," though it is also historically marked by the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building that killed 168 people. Since weather records began in 1890, Oklahoma City has experienced 13 violent tornadoes, including 11 rated F4 or EF4 and two rated F5 or EF5 on the Fujita scale. Norman, Oklahoma is the third-most populous city in the state with a population of 128,026 as of the 2020 census and serves as the county seat of Cleveland County, located 20 miles north of Oklahoma City in the Oklahoma City Metro Area. Founded during the Land Run of 1889 and formally incorporated on May 13, 1891, the city was named after Abner Norman, the area's initial land surveyor who conducted surveys in the early 1870s. Norman is home to the University of Oklahoma, the state's largest university with nearly 32,000 students, whose football team draws over 85,000 spectators to games and whose museums include the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art with the largest French Impressionist collection ever donated to an American university. The city hosts the National Weather Center, a collaborative facility that includes the Storm Prediction Center and National Severe Storms Laboratory, making it a leading hub for atmospheric research and severe weather forecasting. Located within Tornado Alley, Norman is known for its prominent role in weather research and its significance as an education and cultural center in Oklahoma. Stillwater is the tenth-largest city in Oklahoma and county seat of Payne County, located in north-central Oklahoma at the intersection of U.S. Route 177 and State Highway 51, with a 2020 census population of 48,394. The city was founded during the first Oklahoma Land Run on April 22, 1889, when the Unassigned Lands opened for settlement, and officially incorporated with a charter adopted on August 24, 1889. Stillwater's economy is anchored by Oklahoma State University - its largest employer - alongside diverse industries including aerospace, agribusiness, biotechnology, optoelectronics, and software manufacturing, plus institutions like Northern Oklahoma College and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The city grew from a tent city of 300 residents by day's end on April 22, 1889, to over 50 downtown buildings by statehood in 1907 and more than 10,000 residents by World War II. Named for its still creek waters - with origins traced to Native American tribes or local pioneers - Stillwater became Oklahoma Territory's certified land grant college site in 1890 when Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College established its first brick building.
