Lawton is a city in Comanche County in western Oklahoma, located approximately 87 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, with a 2020 census population of 90,381, making it the sixth-largest city in Oklahoma and the largest in Western Oklahoma. Developed on former reservation lands of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache peoples, Lawton was incorporated in 1901 and named after Major General Henry Ware Lawton, a Medal of Honor recipient who died in the Philippine-American War. The city's economy has historically relied on proximity to the Fort Sill Military Reservation, formerly the base of Apache territory before statehood, which provided economic and population stability throughout the 20th century. Today, while still dependent on Fort Sill, Lawton's economy has diversified into manufacturing, higher education, health care, and retail sectors. The city is served by Interstate 44, three major U.S. highways, Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport, and public transportation including Greyhound Lines and the Lawton Area Transit System. Enid is Oklahoma's ninth-largest city and county seat of Garfield County, with a population of 51,308 in the 2020 census. Founded during the Land Run of 1893 on land that was part of the Cherokee Outlet, the city was named after a character in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King by Rock Island railroad attorney Marcus A Low. Enid earned the nicknames "Queen Wheat City" and "Wheat Capital" for its enormous grain storage capacity - the third-largest in the world - and was designated Oklahoma's "purple martin capital" in 1991. The city experienced a "golden age" from the 1910s through World War II as its economy boomed from oil, wheat, and rail industries. Historic landmarks including a preserved land office from the 1893 run are maintained at Humphrey Heritage Village, part of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. Altus is a city in northeastern Jackson County, Oklahoma, and the county seat with a population of 18,729 as of the 2020 census. Founded in 1886 as "Frazer," a trading post on the Great Western Cattle Trail, the town was relocated 2.5 miles east after a devastating June 1891 flash flood and renamed "Altus," meaning "high" in Latin. The city became a regional agricultural hub following the 1908 construction of railroad lines by the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway and the Altus, Wichita Falls and Hollis Railway, which by 1930 supported eight cotton gins, two compresses, and eighteen wholesale businesses. Altus won a competitive 1908 election (2,077 to 1,365 votes) to become the permanent Jackson County seat and constructed its courthouse in 1910. Today, Altus is home to Altus Air Force Base, a major U.S. Air Force training facility for C-17, KC-46, and KC-135 aircrews, as well as Western Oklahoma State College and Southwest Technology Center.
