Flint is a city and county seat in Genesee County, Michigan, located 66 miles northwest of Detroit with a 2020 population of 81,252, making it Michigan's 12th-largest city and the principal city of the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the state. Founded in 1819 by fur trader Jacob Smith as a trading post on the Flint River and incorporated in 1855, the city became a major 19th-century lumber hub before transitioning to carriage manufacturing and automobile production. General Motors was founded in Flint in 1908, transforming the city into an automobile manufacturing powerhouse for Buick and Chevrolet; the city earned the nickname "Vehicle City" and was the site of the pivotal 1936-37 UAW sit-down strike. Since the late 1960s, Flint has experienced severe economic decline, with GM's workforce shrinking from 80,000 in 1978 to under 8,000 by 2010 and the city's population nearly halving from 196,940 in 1960 to 102,434 in 2010. From 2014 to 2019, Flint faced a major public health crisis involving lead contamination in its water supply and a Legionnaires' disease outbreak, though the acute lead emergency has since been addressed through new water infrastructure and distribution of filters to residents. Lapeer is a city in central Michigan and the county seat of Lapeer County, located east of Flint on the Flint River, with a 2020 census population of 9,023. The city's name likely derives from French traders who called the Flint River "la pierre" (stone) due to rocks at the river bottom, though alternative origins include settlers from New York or French missionaries. Founded in 1833 by Alvin N. Hart, a prominent settler from Connecticut who platted the village and later became a State Senator instrumental in relocating Michigan's capital to Lansing, Lapeer developed alongside Enoch J. White's settlement of Whitesville to the west. The city's courthouse, purchased by the Board of Supervisors for $3,000, remains the oldest continuously operating courthouse in Michigan and ranks among the nation's ten oldest. Lapeer has produced notable figures including former Michigan Governor John T. Rich, Louis C. Cramton who helped establish Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and children's author Marguerite deAngeli. Port Huron is a city of 28,983 residents (2020 census) and the county seat of St. Clair County in Michigan's Thumb region, positioned at the source of the St. Clair River along the Canada-United States border directly across from Sarnia, Ontario, and connected by the Blue Water Bridge. The area was originally inhabited by the Ojibwa people before French colonists established a trading post in the 17th century, followed by the United States establishing Fort Gratiot in 1814 after the War of 1812. Rapid growth occurred in the mid-19th century due to European immigration attracted to thriving shipbuilding and lumber industries, with the city incorporating in 1857 and becoming county seat in 1871. Port Huron experienced devastating fires on October 8, 1871, alongside Chicago and other Midwestern cities, and again during the Thumb Fire a decade later. The city is home to significant historic landmarks including Fort St. Joseph (built by French explorer Duluth in 1686), the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse (Michigan's first, constructed in 1829 and standing 84 feet tall), and the Lightship Huron (operated 1935-1970).
