Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States with 3.87 million residents within city limits as of 2025, and serves as the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Southern California within a metropolitan area of 12.9 million people. Located in the Los Angeles Basin adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and covering approximately 469 square miles, it is the county seat of Los Angeles County, the nation's most populous county with 9.86 million residents, and attracts over 3.6 million visitors annually as the third-most visited U.S. city. Originally inhabited by the Tongva people, Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, became part of Mexico in 1821, and was incorporated as a U.S. municipality on April 4, 1850, following the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city experienced rapid growth after the discovery of oil in the 1890s and the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, establishing it as a major economic center. Los Angeles maintains a diverse economy anchored by film and television production, features one of the Americas' busiest container ports, boasts the world's largest collection of Frank Gehry-designed architecture, and generated a gross metropolitan product exceeding $1.295 trillion in 2024, ranking third globally behind New York and Tokyo, while hosting the Summer Olympics in 1932, 1984, and 2028. Gardena is a city in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California, with a population of 61,027 at the 2020 census, up from 58,829 in 2010. Until 2014, it held the distinction of having the highest percentage of Japanese Americans in California, contributing significantly to the South Bay's status as home to the highest density of Japanese companies in mainland United States. The city was founded in 1887 when real estate developers Pomeroy & Harrison subdivided the 650-acre Amestoy Ranch in anticipation of the Los Angeles and Redondo Railway, with Civil War veteran Spencer Roane Thorpe credited as the first settler. Originally known as "Berryland" for its abundant berry crops and later incorporated on September 11, 1930, Gardena generated nearly one-third of its annual budget from legal cardroom taxes between 1936 and 1980. The city's 5.9 square miles include the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve, a naturally occurring 9.4-acre marshland at its southeast corner. Montebello, meaning "Beautiful Mountain" in Italian, is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the Gateway Cities and San Gabriel Valley regions, with a 2020 census population of 63,833. The city's current 1,200-acre area was developed in May 1899 from land purchased in 1885 by Los Angeles businessmen including banker Isaias W. Hellman and historian Harris Newmark, who bought the property from Alessandro Repetto's estate for $60,000. Montebello was historically significant as an early 20th-century oil reserve source and as the site of the January 8, 1847 Battle of Río San Gabriel, a decisive U.S. Army victory in the Mexican-American War that secured American control of Los Angeles and Alta California. The area's indigenous Tongva people, who inhabited the Los Angeles basin and southern Channel Islands before Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's arrival in 1542, were largely decimated by European diseases by 1870. Montebello's historical roots also include the founding of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on September 8, 1771, California's fourth mission, which relocated to present-day San Gabriel after a destructive 1777 flood.
