San Diego is the eighth-most populous city in the United States and second-most populous in California with over 1.4 million residents, located on the Pacific coast of Southern California adjacent to the Mexico-United States border. Known as the Birthplace of California, San Diego was first visited by Europeans in 1542 when Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the area for Spain, with the Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá establishing the first European settlement in California in 1769. The city's economy is driven by military and defense activities, tourism, international trade, research, and manufacturing, and it hosts major universities including UC San Diego and San Diego State University. San Diego is renowned for its mild Mediterranean climate, extensive beaches and parks, strong naval presence, and emergence as a center for wireless, electronics, healthcare, and biotechnology development. The city anchors the San Diego-Tijuana transborder region home to an estimated five million people, with the San Ysidro Port of Entry serving as the world's fourth-busiest international land border crossing and San Diego International Airport operating as the nation's busiest single-runway airport. La Jolla is a coastal neighborhood in San Diego, California, located 12 miles north of downtown and occupying 7 miles of Pacific Ocean shoreline, bordered by Pacific Beach to the south and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve to the north. The name derives from the Kumeyaay word "mat kulaaxuuy" meaning "land of holes," though it is popularly attributed to the Spanish phrase "la joya" meaning "the jewel." Originally mapped as pueblo land during the Mexican period, La Jolla was incorporated into San Diego in 1850 and developed into a resort destination following the 1890s construction of the San Diego, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Railway, which brought the area from 60 lots to 100 buildings and 350 residents by 1900. Today, La Jolla is home to major research and educational institutions including the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps Research, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and the Birch Aquarium, making it a prominent center for scientific research and higher education. Del Mar is a beach city in San Diego County, California, situated on the Pacific Ocean coast that was established in 1885 as a seaside resort by railroad official Theodore M. Loop and Colonel Jacob Taylor. Named after Bayard Taylor's poem "The Fight of Paso del Mar," the city incorporated in 1959 with a population of 3,954 as of the 2020 census, down from 4,161 in 2010. Del Mar is known for hosting the annual San Diego County Fair since 1936 and summer horse racing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which opened in 1937. The town's distinctive character stems from its Tudor Revival architecture, including the Stratford Inn hotel completed around 1910 by prominent Los Angeles architect John C. Austin and Stratford Square retail center built in 1927, which attracted Hollywood silent film stars in the early 20th century. Despite early setbacks including the 1889 fire that destroyed Colonel Taylor's Casa del Mar hotel and subsequent economic recession, Del Mar developed into an exclusive coastal community known for preserving its small-town atmosphere.
