Palm Springs is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California, located within the Coachella Valley of the Colorado Desert, covering approximately 94 square miles and serving as the administrative capital of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians reservation, the most populated reservation in California. With a 2020 census population of 44,575 that triples between November and March due to winter snowbirds (predominantly Canadian), the city functions as both a retirement destination and winter resort. The Cahuilla people first settled the area 2,000 years ago, establishing permanent settlements in the canyons and utilizing natural hot springs in winter months, with numerous petroglyphs and archaeological remains visible today in Tahquitz, Chino, and Andreas Canyons. The Agua Caliente Reservation was established in 1876 with a checkerboard pattern of 31,128 acres, including 6,700 acres within city limits, making the tribe one of California's wealthiest nations. Palm Springs is renowned for its mid-century modern architecture, design elements, arts and cultural scene, and recreational activities. Vista is a city in San Diego County, California, located 7 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean within the San Diego-Carlsbad metropolitan area, with a 2020 census population of 98,381 and estimated 2023 population of 99,835. Originally inhabited by the Luiseño people and later part of Mexican land grants Rancho Buena Vista and Rancho Guajome, Vista was incorporated as a city on January 28, 1963, and became a charter city on June 13, 2007. The city's development accelerated after the 1923 establishment of the Vista Irrigation District, which brought water from Lake Henshaw and enabled agricultural growth in citrus, avocados, tomatoes, and celery, earning Vista the title "avocado capital of the world" by the late 1940s. Since the 1980s, Vista has diversified its economy with light manufacturing and has become a significant hub for the San Diego craft beer industry in the 21st century. Downtown Vista has received approximately $12 million in city investments since the 1990s, including the 2020 completion of the Paseo Santa Fe corridor project, which transformed Santa Fe Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly commercial and cultural district. Escondido, Spanish for "hidden," is a city in San Diego County's North County region with a population of 151,038 as of the 2020 census and one of California's oldest cities, incorporated in 1888. Originally inhabited by the Luiseño and Kumeyaay peoples, the area was later divided into Mexican land grants including Rancho Rincon del Diablo (granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1843) and Rancho San Bernardo (granted in 1842 and 1845). During the Mexican-American War, the Battle of San Pasqual was fought southeast of Escondido in 1846 between Mexican forces under Andrés Pico and American forces under Stephen W. Kearny, Kit Carson, and Archibald Gillespie. The city developed as a Spanish-speaking settlement in its 1850 census but experienced rapid growth during the Southern California Land Boom of the 1880s when non-Hispanic settlers, particularly from Midwestern states, arrived in increasing numbers. The rancho land, sold in 1868 to Edward McGeary and the Wolfskill brothers for $8,000, was developed for ranching and mining operations before the city's incorporation.
