Anaheim is a city in northern Orange County, California, part of the Greater Los Angeles area, with a 2020 population of 346,824, making it the most populous city in Orange County and the tenth-most populous in California. Founded in 1857 by fifty German-American families and incorporated on March 18, 1876, Anaheim transformed from an agricultural community into a major urban center following the opening of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. The city is home to the Disneyland Resort, the Anaheim Convention Center, the Los Angeles Angels (MLB), and the Anaheim Ducks (NHL), and formerly hosted the Los Angeles Rams (NFL) from 1980 to 1994. Anaheim's city limits extend nearly the full width of Orange County, spanning approximately twenty miles from Cypress in the west to the Riverside County line in the east, encompassing diverse neighborhoods including the Disneyland Resort district, the Platinum Triangle mixed-use development around Angel Stadium, and Anaheim Hills. The city's name blends "Ana" from the nearby Santa Ana River with the German suffix "-heim" meaning "home." Huntington Beach is a city in Orange County, California, located 35 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, with a 2020 population of 198,711 making it the fourth most populous city in Orange County and the most populous beach city in the county. Originally named Pacific City, it was renamed in 1903 after businessman Henry E. Huntington, who provided railroad access to the area and whose development company remains a major landowner and mineral rights holder in the city. The city boasts a 9.5-mile stretch of sandy beach and is nicknamed "Surf City" due to consistent year-round surfing conditions generated by North Pacific swells in winter and Southern Hemisphere storms in summer. Incorporated on February 17, 1909, Huntington Beach developed from agricultural roots (lima beans, asparagus, sugar beets) into an oil-rich area after petroleum discovery, with the original 1,000-foot timber pier built in 1904 becoming an iconic landmark. Today, the city remains known for its strong beach culture, ideal surfing conditions, and active oil industry, though many derricks have been replaced by residential development since the mid-20th century. Santa Ana is a city in Orange County, California, located in the Greater Los Angeles region with a 2020 census population of 310,227, making it the third most populous city in Orange County and the 14th most populous in California. Originally inhabited by the Tongva and Juaneño/Luiseño peoples, the area was named Vallejo de Santa Ana by Friar Junípero Serra following the 1769 Portolá expedition, with Mission San Juan Capistrano established in 1776. In 1810, Spanish sergeant José Antonio Yorba received Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, the only land grant in Orange County issued under Spanish rule, which encompassed lands of present-day Irvine, Anaheim, Orange, and Tustin. William H. Spurgeon founded the modern city of Santa Ana in 1869, which incorporated in 1886 with 2,000 residents and became Orange County's county seat in 1889 after the Southern Pacific Railroad built a branch line there in 1877. Today, approximately four-fifths of Santa Ana's population is Hispanic or Latino, earning it characterization by The New York Times as the "face of a new California" due to Latino influence in electoral, cultural, and demographic spheres.
