San Bernardino is the county seat of San Bernardino County in Southern California's Inland Empire region, with a 2020 population of 222,101 making it California's 18th-largest city and anchoring the 12th-largest metropolitan area in the nation at 4.74 million residents. Named in 1810 by Spanish priest Francisco Dumetz, the area transitioned from Tongva indigenous settlements and Mexican ranchos to an American town founded by Mormon settlers in 1851 and officially incorporated in 1854. The Mormons established San Bernardino based on their "City of Zion" urban plan and developed irrigated commercial farming and lumber operations that supplied much of Southern California before most departed in 1857. Following the Mormon exodus, the city emerged as a major commercial hub at the crossroads between Southern California and the American Southwest, becoming the economic, cultural, and political center of the San Bernardino Valley and the wider Inland Empire. Today, San Bernardino hosts the consulates of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, and serves as a college town through California State University, San Bernardino. Pomona is a city in the San Gabriel Valley of eastern Los Angeles County, California, with a 2020 census population of 151,713 and the main campus of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) partially within its city limits. Named after the Roman goddess of fruit by horticulturist Solomon Gates in a 1875 naming contest, the city was first settled by Ricardo Véjar and Ygnacio Palomares in the 1830s during Mexican rule and incorporated on January 6, 1888. By the 1880s, the arrival of Coachella Valley water and railroad access established Pomona as the western anchor of the citrus-growing region, earning it the nickname "Queen of the Citrus Belt" in the 1920s when it had one of the highest per-capita income levels in the United States. The city gained prominence in the 1940s as a movie-previewing location for major studios, while the 1962 Pomona Mall became a recognized example of mid-century modern architecture and now houses art galleries, studios, and restaurants. In 2005, Norma Torres became the first woman of Guatemalan heritage elected to a mayoral post outside of Guatemala.
