Scranton is a second-class city and county seat of Lackawanna County in Northeastern Pennsylvania with a population of 76,328 as of the 2020 census, making it Pennsylvania's sixth-most populous city and the largest in its region. Located 56 miles north of Allentown, 104 miles north-northwest of Philadelphia, and 99 miles west-northwest of New York City, the city is part of the Wyoming Valley metropolitan area with approximately 574,000 residents. Incorporated as a borough in 1856 and as a city in 1866, Scranton became the county seat in 1878 and earned the nickname "Electric City" for pioneering electric streetcar technology in the late 19th century. The city was a major industrial and anthracite coal mining center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with peak industrial output during the 1930s and 1940s until the 1959 Knox Mine disaster effectively ended regional coal mining. Scranton's population declined from a peak of 143,433 in 1930 to 76,089 in 2010 due to reduced coal demand and postwar economic shifts, though it experienced slight growth by 2020. Wilkes-Barre is a city in Luzerne County in Northeastern Pennsylvania along the Susquehanna River, with a 2024 population of 44,661 and serving as the administrative center for the Wyoming Valley metropolitan area of approximately 574,000 residents. Founded in 1769 and named after British MPs John Wilkes and Isaac Barré who supported colonial America, the city was incorporated as a borough in 1806 and re-incorporated as a city in 1869. The city experienced rapid 19th-century growth fueled by nearby anthracite coal mining and immigrant labor, reaching a peak population of over 86,000 in 1930 before declining significantly following World War II and the 1959 Knox Mine disaster. Located 49 miles north-northwest of Allentown, 97 miles north-northwest of Philadelphia, and 106 miles west-northwest of New York City, Wilkes-Barre remains the largest city in Luzerne County and the 11th-largest in Pennsylvania despite its population falling to approximately half its 1930 peak. The city is surrounded by the Pocono Mountains to the east, the Endless Mountains to the north and west, and the Lehigh Valley to the south. Williamsport is the county seat of Lycoming County in North Central Pennsylvania, located 177 miles from Philadelphia, 199 miles from Pittsburgh, and 85 miles from Harrisburg, with a 2020 population of 27,754 serving as the principal city of a metropolitan area of approximately 114,000 residents. Settled in the late 18th century following the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix, the city prospered through its lumber industry and peaked at 45,729 residents in 1930 before declining about 40 percent during and after the Great Depression. Williamsport is the birthplace of Little League Baseball and houses two colleges - Pennsylvania College of Technology and Lycoming College - along with federal and county courthouses, making it the cultural, financial, and commercial hub of the region. The city is known for its sports legacy, arts scene, food, and attractions including the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum, Millionaires' Row, the Community Arts Center, and the Susquehanna Riverwalk. Founded with its first house built in March 1796, Williamsport established key institutions including its first post office in 1799, first store in 1801, and the Repasz Band in 1831, which remains the oldest brass band in America.
