Boalsburg is an unincorporated census-designated place in Harris Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, with a population of 4,577 as of the 2020 census, located 4 miles southeast of State College in the State College Metropolitan Statistical Area. Named after the Boal family, Irish emigrants from County Londonderry who settled the region, Boalsburg is home to the Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum, which houses artifacts including an admiral's desk reportedly belonging to Christopher Columbus, brought from Spain in 1919 after Mathilde de Lagarde Boal's inheritance from her aunt Victoria. The village, which features the distinctive Irish Ulster "Diamond" market square design, claims to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, though historians Bellware and Gardiner disputed this claim in their 2014 book. Notable attractions include the Pennsylvania Military Museum, the Boalsburg Historic District (added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977), and the Tussey Mountain Ski Area on its eastern edge. Originally a key stopping point on the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh road with the historic David Boal tavern, Boalsburg today is centered on Pennsylvania Route 45 and U.S. Route 322, with Spring Creek flowing northward toward the Susquehanna River system. Reynoldsville is a borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, located 73 miles northeast of Pittsburgh in a productive soft coal region, with a 2020 population of 2,549. Originally called Winslow Township, it was renamed in 1850 after local postmaster Thomas Reynolds and grew significantly after Tilton Reynolds began selling property lots in 1855. The town's economy developed through 19th-century industries including silk mills, brick and tile works, a tannery, macaroni factory, and asbestos plant, and expanded further in 1913 when it annexed West Reynoldsville and adjacent areas. Located in the valley of Sandy Lick Creek, Reynoldsville is situated on U.S. Route 322, which connects it 12 miles northwest to county seat Brookville and 10 miles southeast to Luthersburg. The borough hosts Jefferson County-DuBois AVTS (Jeff Tech), a comprehensive career and technology school serving grades 9-12 from four school districts with training in 14 different career areas. Erie, Pennsylvania is the fifth-most populous city in the state and the largest city in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a population of 92,940 as of 2024, located on the south shore of Lake Erie approximately 80 miles from Buffalo, 90 miles from Cleveland, and 120 miles from Pittsburgh. Named after the Native American Erie people who inhabited the area until the mid-17th century, the city earned nicknames including "Gem City" for its natural harbor and "Flagship City" as the homeport of Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship Niagara. European settlement began when the French constructed Fort Presque Isle in 1753, which the British took over in 1760, followed by Pennsylvania's acquisition of the disputed Erie Triangle in 1792 after Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York relinquished their claims for $151,640.25 in continental certificates. Surveyor Andrew Ellicott, who completed Pierre Charles L'Enfant's design of Washington, D.C., arrived in June 1795 to lay out the city plan, initiating settlement that year. As part of the Rust Belt, Erie has transitioned from a manufacturing-based economy to one centered on insurance, healthcare, higher education, technology, service industries, and tourism, with access to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
