Erie, Pennsylvania is the fifth-most populous city in the state and the largest city in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a population of 92,940 as of 2024, located on the south shore of Lake Erie approximately 80 miles from Buffalo, 90 miles from Cleveland, and 120 miles from Pittsburgh. Named after the Native American Erie people who inhabited the area until the mid-17th century, the city earned nicknames including "Gem City" for its natural harbor and "Flagship City" as the homeport of Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship Niagara. European settlement began when the French constructed Fort Presque Isle in 1753, which the British took over in 1760, followed by Pennsylvania's acquisition of the disputed Erie Triangle in 1792 after Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York relinquished their claims for $151,640.25 in continental certificates. Surveyor Andrew Ellicott, who completed Pierre Charles L'Enfant's design of Washington, D.C., arrived in June 1795 to lay out the city plan, initiating settlement that year. As part of the Rust Belt, Erie has transitioned from a manufacturing-based economy to one centered on insurance, healthcare, higher education, technology, service industries, and tourism, with access to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. Altoona is a city in Blair County, Pennsylvania with a population of 43,963 as of the 2020 census and serves as the principal city of the Altoona metropolitan area with 122,823 residents. Founded in 1849 by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a shop and maintenance complex, the city grew rapidly due to Civil War-era locomotive demand, reaching populations of approximately 2,000 in 1854, 10,000 in 1870, and 20,000 in 1880. Known for its railroad heritage, Altoona is home to notable landmarks including the Horseshoe Curve, the Railroaders Memorial Museum, and the Juniata Shops of the Altoona Works, as well as the Altoona Curve baseball team, the AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates that plays at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The city has historically been significant to American history, hosting the 1862 War Governors' Conference that approved the Emancipation Proclamation and serving as the site of the first Interstate Commission meeting to design Gettysburg National Cemetery. Despite experiencing industrial decline and urban decentralization in recent decades, Altoona continues to maintain cultural institutions including the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, which has been based there since 1928. Johnstown is the largest city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, located 57 miles east of Pittsburgh, with a 2020 population of 18,411 and a metropolitan area population of 133,472. Settled by Europeans in 1770 and formally platted in 1800 by Swiss German immigrant Joseph Johns, the city became a major industrial center during the 19th and 20th centuries, with the Cambria Iron Company dominating as the nation's leading steel producer by 1860 and the city producing much of America's barred wire through the late 1800s. Johnstown is historically significant for the catastrophic Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam collapsed 14.1 miles upstream, killing at least 2,209 people, along with two subsequent major floods in 1936 and 1977. The city is home to five national historic districts and multiple National Register listings including the Cambria Iron Company, Grand Army of the Republic Hall, and the Johnstown Inclined Railway. Like many Rust Belt cities, Johnstown experienced severe economic decline due to the loss of steel industry jobs from globalization and the relocation of American manufacturing overseas.
