Pittsburgh is a city in southwestern Pennsylvania located where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River, with a 2020 population of 302,971 making it Pennsylvania's second-largest city and the center of a metropolitan area with over 2.43 million people. Known as "the Steel City," Pittsburgh was named in 1758 by Scottish General John Forbes in honor of British statesman William Pitt and developed as a vital industrial hub that once ranked behind only New York City and Chicago in corporate headquarters employment. The city experienced significant deindustrialization in the late 20th century but has since diversified its economy around healthcare, education, and technology, anchored by institutions like the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon University, and 10 Fortune 500 companies. Pittsburgh is famous for its 446 bridges - earning it the nickname "City of Bridges" - and cultural institutions including the Carnegie Museums, National Aviary, and professional sports teams like the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. The city also serves as a federal headquarters for cyber defense, robotics, and energy research, and in 2009 hosted the G20 summit. Washington is a city in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and serves as its county seat with a 2020 population of 13,176 in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area of southwestern Pennsylvania. Settled beginning around 1768 by Scottish, Irish, and Virginian immigrants, the town was officially established on March 28, 1781, and later renamed Washington when David Hoge laid out its lots, though local lore incorrectly claims George Washington visited the area. The city became the center of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791, one of the first major uprisings against the new U.S. government, with the David Bradford House now serving as a museum dedicated to this pivotal event. Washington experienced rapid growth from the 1880s through early 1900s following discovery of oil and natural gas at the Washington oil field, and developed an extensive electric trolley system between 1889 and 1953. Today the city is home to Washington & Jefferson College and Pony League baseball, and is nicknamed "Little Washington" to distinguish it from Washington, D.C. Beaver Falls is a city in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, located 31 miles northwest of Pittsburgh along the Beaver River as part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, with a population of 9,005 at the 2020 census. Originally named Brighton after the English hometown of the area's surveyors, the town was renamed Beaver Falls in 1859 when the Harmony Society purchased the land and replanned it to twice its original size, gaining borough status in 1868. The city experienced significant growth in the 1870s with a notable Chinatown that housed up to 225 Chinese workers employed by the Beaver Falls Cutlery Company, and expanded further in 1932 when the Borough of College Hill merged with it. The area first appeared in historical records in 1770 when Moravian missionary David Zeisberger and his followers reached the "Falls of the Beaver" via canoe, having been guided there by Lenape chief Pakanke. Beaver Falls has experienced economic decline typical of Rust Belt cities, losing nearly 50 percent of its population between 1940 and 2000, and was struck by an F3 tornado on May 31, 1985, during a severe outbreak across northern Beaver County.
